The Role of the Manager

By Cliff Grumbles, Manager
Texas Private Security Bureau

As you are aware the manager of a licensed company can be an employee or they can be an owner or partner as well as manager, but were you aware that a manager may be in violation of Chapter 1702, Texas Occupations Code if they fail to maintain a supervisory position on a daily basis.

Furthermore a person may also be in violation if they apply to serve as a manager without the intent to maintain that supervisory position on a daily basis.

Depending on the size of a company, the every day responsibility of the manager can be varied. The number of people directly supervised and the number of support staff dictates what actual duties a manager must perform. The responsibility to assure that the company and its employees adhere to the requirements of Chapter 1702 and the Administrative Rules does not vary.

Recently we have observed some circumstances in which managers failed to maintain their supervisory positions. The results were violations of administrative rules and serious problems for the companies involved. These managers are going to be held accountable to the Board for their failure to direct and control company issues related to violations.

The role of the manager under the provisions of Chapter 1702 is one of responsibility. Be proactive in your company to see that employees are aware of and comply with the administrative rules and pertinent sections of the Private Security Act (Chapter 1702). The manager should also set the example in seeking educational and training opportunities for themselves while encouraging other company employees to pursue training beyond the required continuing education.

Professional attitude and appearance

An important issue for a manager to be concerned with is the condition and appearance of the security officer. Encourage your officers to be mindful of the image they are projecting in their demeanor and in the appearance of their uniform. Be sure they are familiar with the rules that dictate what is to be displayed on their uniform.

Recognize your exceptional employees and compliment a job well done. Let your employees know you care about them and the service they are providing.

The managers role is a challenge, accept it with enthusiasm and project a positive image to your employees.
