Online Education:
Texas is at the forefront in providing training for Private Security Professionals

By Frank Torres, MS

After 9/11 people stood up and took notice of homeland security. We know police officers, firefighters and EMT professionals are vital to our safety. However, it is the private security professional who patrol areas across the country that we also entrust to keep our nation safe. This large population, if not the largest, of first responders also require training in homeland security. They play a critical role in maintaining the security of our nation. This program is designed to train the private security professional.

I have been teaching Criminal Justice Education for over 12 years (High School and College). And, although I encountered many obstacles, I have created and presently administrate accredited Criminal Justice Education for security professionals. All of these courses are taught daily in the criminal justice class at San Benito High School and at nights or weekends at Texas State Technical College. Most of the courses are online, which allows security officers the flexibility to continue their regular duties as well as personal schedules.

This Program is quite unique. These Criminal Justice courses are so popular that many professionals such as police officers, social workers, probation officers, attorneys, and even civilians are interested in taking them now, whether CEUs are awarded or not. I also have students from all over the nation, including but not limited to California, Nevada and New York. International students from Mexico and South Africa show similar interest.

I take pride in helping hundreds of people throughout the nation. I strongly believe that courses like these are vital to public safety and I urge state leaders and security professionals across the country to set up similar programs. I think that the main reason my Criminal Justice courses are extremely popular is because they are affordable, the courses are controlled and approved by an institution of higher education (TSTC Harlingen) and are accessible to practically everyone. Everyone will benefit from this program. I believe that the knowledge and skills obtained from this program will create additional employment opportunities, as well as, striving to have the best educated private security professional in the nation.

TSTC has designed this educational program to allow Level III security academies to offer this opportunity to their security professionals. They will have the opportunity to receive a certificate in Security and Special Officer. Only officers registered with the State of Texas will be allowed to enroll in this class. They must enroll with TSTC Harlingen and complete all course requirements before any credentials (CEUs) will be awarded. The student must complete the required course content, successfully pass the required exams, and evaluate the course before any transcripts or certificates are awarded. This may also fulfill the continuing education requirements needed to maintain their license.

Security academies that participate in this program can bring more value to their academies because of the opportunity to present a certificate of completion for training hours from an institution of higher education. TSTC Harlingen is at the forefront in providing this type of educational service. It is the intent that all academies will be encouraged to advertise this opportunity. We also plan to recognize the security academy that recruits and enrolls the most students enrolled in this educational training program. This program will increase Level III security academy enrollment.

TSTC can provide on - line or classroom training for the following Criminal Justice and Private Security courses:

  1. Homeland Security for Private Security Professionals 50 contact hours (5.0 CEUs)

  2. Special Topics in Criminal Justice Studies 50 contact hours (5.0 CEUs)

  3. Sexual Harassment in the Security Profession 10 contact hours (1.0 CEUs)

  4. Security and Special Officer 48 contact hours (4.8 CEUs)

NOTE: State approved security academies should contact Texas State Technical College in Harlingen Texas. 1-800-852-8784 ext.4607

I truly believe this is a win-win program. If you would like more information about these courses, contact us and we will be glad to help you.
