The Director's View
From the Desk Of Cliff Grumbles,
Interim Director TCPS
Aim high for the security industry
As a result of the tragedy of September 11, 2001, we have seen heightened concerns about background investigations, including criminal history checks of security officers. Of course, the circumstance that garnered the most attention involved airport baggage screeners, a category of security that the Commission does not regulate. The concern of course, revolves around the degree of access a security officer may gain into areas of vital infrastructure services. People are now more concerned with being reassured that the person providing security are qualified and authorized to perform a critical service.
The TCPS Investigation Division will continue its efforts to uncover unlicensed activity. We will also keep up monitoring efforts to assure licensed companies are properly registering their employees. Be sure to emphasize to your company personnel who process applications the importance of timely submission of paperwork, accurately completed to the Commission.
Take the time to report to the Investigation Division any activity you suspect may be unlicensed. Include as much information as you can gather about the suspect activity i.e.: who, what, when, why and where are still good guidelines to apply when reporting possible unlicensed activity. If applicable, providing the location of the activity, the hours of occurrence, client information, etc., which will save a lot of time for our investigative staff.
A good way to stay on top of the latest information is to be active in your organization, attend the meetings and network with other security professionals.
With your efforts, we can together work toward the goal of aiming high to achieve the highest possible standards for the security industry.
