ASSIST Convention 2003

What a Convention!!
San Antonio Convention Breaks All Records

The 2003 Annual ASSIST Convention is now history, but what a terrific program it was! We take from it many great memories, a wealth of information, and business ideas we can put to work for us.

It was truly gratifying to see so many ASSIST members and their guests attend. There was an air of happy and genuine camaraderie as security professionals went out of their way to help each other, form lasting personal and business relationships, and aid each other's questions or concerns. We had an opportunity to catch up with old friends, spin a few tales of the past, and meet many new friends.

Kudos For a Great Job
Our thanks and congratulations go out to the South Texas Alamo Chapter and to the ASSIST Executive Board for having such a well-organized convention program. As always, Executive Board Chapter President Dave Parker planned an exceptional golf tournament for us at San Antonio's Brackenridge Golf Course. Every detail of the 2003 ASSIST meeting- from the initial registration to the final Saturday meeting- was seamless. How could we go wrong with terrific guest speakers, San Antonio's lush River Walk scenery, unforgettable meals, and great entertainment? Dan Flores has told me that he has education, events, parties, deep sea fishing and more for the Convention 2004.

A Well-Deserved Honor
One of the key moments during our 2003 Convention was when our membership awarded State Rep. Pat Haggerty with a certificate naming him ASSIST's first honorary member. For the past three years, Pat has been instrumental in the passage of several laws that were crucial for the protection of security officers and the public's safety. He has been a loyal friend, a supportive ally in the Texas House of Representatives, and a champion of the security profession. Pat, we're glad you're in our corner.

Our Deepest Thanks
On behalf of ASSIST and all its membership, I extend our sincere gratitude to each of the speakers who freely shared their knowledge and expertise to make this year's program such a valuable experience. Many thanks are due to Texas Gov. Rick Perry for having his representatives attend as presenters and guest speakers. These proud Texans- Jana Burleson, Director Colonel Tommy Davis, Chief Marshall Caskey, Director Cliff Grumbles, Commissioners George Craig and Michael Samulin, and our Lobbyist Keith Oakley- let us benefit from their vast experience and insight on the future of the security profession. As each of the security profession leaders spoke, our members' faces were beaming with pride, patriotism, and rock-solid dedication to service. You could clearly see and feel that each person in that room was proud to be a Texan. From that moment on, many of us shared a common feeling that we'd witnessed a positive turning point- the Lone Star State and business professionals had finally united to work together, strategize, and build a foundation for good communication.

Our members deserve the biggest thank you of all. Each of these men and women took time out of their busy lives and work schedules to contribute so much to one another and to the enrichment of the security profession.

The ASSIST Executive Board, the chapter presidents - and you, our membership- have a lot of work to do in the future. The leadership exemplified by Texas security officials and ASSIST is setting the example for the rest of this nation to follow on important issues like education and professional development. We have one objective in mind- to serve the public with the best that the security profession can offer.

Now, let us all work together to increase our membership's role and make 2004 the best year ever!

Best Regards,

Dave Scepanski
