CENTRAL TEXAS REGION

The Central Texas Region met Jan. 25 to kick off the new year. The meeting had a great turnout and we even had a few newcomers interested in joining ASSIST and Central Texas LEAPS.

LEAPS member Chris Toliver, Alan Trevino and Charlie Deckert met with the Travis County Sheriffï¿½s office to discuss LEAPS and our mutual benefits of participating in the LEAPS program. Sherriff Greg Hamilton received LEAPS with open arms and has offered his training room as a resource for future LEAPS training to be conducted by the Sheriffs office. We received schedules of shift change meetings and representatives from LEAPS have been meeting with Deputyï¿½s as they conduct their shift change and answering general question about how private security is conducted in Texas, the rules and laws as well as handing out the Texas Law Enforcement Guide to Private Security pocket cards. We are being well received, even at 6 a.m.

On March 13 members from all regions were in attendance for the Legislative Walk the Halls. We were able to meet with nearly all of our Reps and Senators. We expressed our support for some bills and presented our arguments for others.

On March 29 Central Texas Region had a quick meeting to discuss DPS PSB board news and current legislation, specifically the Jailers Bill HB-2526 and HB 2528 regarding the requirement for all licenseeï¿½s to mark all vehicles with the words ï¿½Not affiliated with LAW ENFORCEMENT.

On March 29 Central Texas members Alan Trevino, and Charlie Deckert along with other ASSIST members attended the committee hearing for Jailers Bill HB-2526. It was not a good day for private security. Alan Trevino ASSIST state Board Vice President and ASSIST President Bob Burt testified against the bill along with others from our industry. It is likely that this bill unless it is stopped in the house will pass.

On March 29, Alan Trevino a Central Texas Region ASSIST member and State Board Vice President announced his candidacy for President for the ASSIST state board of directors.

Alan has served the ASSIST membership since 2004 when he helped create the Central Texas Chapter of ASSIST. Alan was the Secretary that first year. In 2005 Alan was elected Vice President for the Central Texas chapter and served a full term until 2007. Alan continued his uninterrupted service to ASSIST in 2007 when he was elected President of the Central Texas Region, as President of his region Alan also held a seat on the ASSIST State Board of Directors. In early 2010 Alan was appointed to a vacated seat on the State Board of Directors as Vice President. In this capacity Alan sits as the Co-Chair for the Legislative Committee.

The Central Texas Region has contributed $500 to the TOP GUN Competition benefiting the Fallen Officers Fund for the 2011 Convention, to be held in Septe. 28 to Oct. 1, 2011 Brownsville, Texas. Make plans to attend, this is a Voting Year and ASSIST needs your support.
