ASSIST proudly names State Senator Mike Jackson and State
Representative Pat Haggerty as "ASSIST Legislators of the
Year" for their ongoing commitment to the security
professionals in Texas.
Protecting yourself
from the departing (or more likely fired) employee
(By Barry Greve) - Part One: Non-disclosure and confidentiality
agreements. While employees come and go, what you dont want is
for that departing employee to go with your clients, pricing
information or other confidential information and then use it to
your detriment. This is the first of a two part series designed to
help protect your company from none other than modern day piracy.
Disabilities-related
pre-employment screening
(By Kent Hanszen) - The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 was
passed to protect most American workers from discrimination on the
basis of disabilities. Under the ADA, employers may not deny
employment to or take adverse employment action against disabled
employees who can perform the essential functions of their jobs with
reasonable accommodation.
The Taser issue
(By Richard Wiles) - As with any piece of new equipment, there is
the potential for misuse and abuse. Good management requires a clear
and consistent policy and a training program that meets best
practices.
Stun guns save lives
when used properly by licensed, professional peace officers
(By Christopher McGill) - The advent of the stun gun in law
enforcement has offered a breakthrough for officers in Texas and
elsewhere across the country. In fact, one might use the word
revolutionary when it comes to comparing police work prior to the
invention of the Taser.
Recognizing the good
(By Henry Clemons) - We all know Security Officers get enough of the
bad publicity but I am here to tell you many officers stand out
everyday and go unrecognized.
TBS Bureau
violations
(By Buck Shodrock) - Recently in less than a week, Troopers assigned
to the Private Security Bureau in South Texas arrested 12
individuals for violating the Private Security Act.
TWIC 101:
Transportation Workers Identification Credential, an Introduction
(By ENS Kassandra Cinatl) - The Transportation Security
Administration and the United States Coast Guard, under the
direction of the Department of Homeland Security, are beginning to
implement a program designed to further enhance port security and

Verified Response by
security officers is working in Dallas
(By John Weekley) - After its first full year in effect, Verified
Response is working and already showing very positive results,
according to a report to business groups by Dallas insurance
executive and businessman Larry Davis, Chairman of the Commission.
Safety in Texas
schools
(By Garrett Oakley) - School safety has always been a concern in
Texas, but after the Sept. 11 terrorism attacks, school safety took
on a whole new meaning. Most schools were prepared to deal with the
occasional gang fight or random shooting that may occur, but not a
terrorist attack.
ASSIST history and
origins
(By Ann Ball and Susan Griswold) - When Dave Scepanski asked Susan
and I to take over from Dale Watson in writing this column, I wanted
to yell Oh no! Not again! For me, it wouldnt be the first
time I had to follow Dale in doing something and his are really
big shoes to fill.
Public relations
firm adds value to membership
(By Bob Kenney) - As those who read the last issue of the magazine
may recall, ASSIST hired in December The Texas Consulting Group
Inc., based in Dallas, to provide public relations, public affairs,
marketing, and business communications assistance and consulting for
our association and its members. Since that time, TCG principals
Tina Peyton and John Weekley have been hard at work writing articles
for the magazine, meeting with ASSIST groups, attending legislative
conferences in Austin, and meeting with Walt Roberts and myself
and Dallas officials on Verified Response.
LEAPS - El Paso
What is going on in El Paso that makes it so safe? Well, good
neighborhoods and good communication between the El Paso Police
Department and the public. But in the middle of all this is LEAPS.
LEAPS - Dallas
LEAPS-Dallas held a general meeting April 18 at the Dallas Police
Department Headquarters. Our speaker discussed and explained the
Metro Operations Support and Analytical Intelligence Center Fusion
Center which will allow private security and law enforcement in
North Texas to exchange information on a real-time basis.
LEAPS - Houston
By meeting every other month, we, security and law enforcement
professionals are getting a chance to interact with each other off
the street. It is amazing how much we have in common. We must find a
common ground to stand on to achieve our goals of making our cities
a safer place to live.
Above and Beyond
honors two lifesavers
(By Ann Ball) - The gulf Coast Region Chapter of ASSIST honored two
Houston security officers as lifesavers at the April meeting.
Through the Above and Beyond Program, the officers were presented
with trophies and certificates commemorating their quick thought and
action.
Assault against a
security officer
(By Jeff Moore) - It is up to every company owner, manager and
supervisor to make sure that if one of your security officers is
assaulted, you do everything in your power to make sure that your
officers rights are protected and that the criminal gets what is
coming to them.
Walkin' the halls
(By Walt Roberts) - The session is here and we are on it. On Feb.
27, the Security Professionals converged on Austin to sell our
improvements to the legislature. To prepare for this, on Dec. 15,
2006, we were included in a great meeting hosted by DPS. With
Michael Kelly presiding we had a great turnout and a very productive
discussion group.
Convention 2007 El
Paso
(By Dave Scepanski) - This years annual conference entitled
Security on the Borders is a unique opportunity that brings
together professional experts and private security companies to
discuss issues facing the security officers, and security profession.
