& Press Releases (continued)
Peace
officer appreciation
(By U.S. Senator John Cornyn) - Each time we gather together,
were reminded that the law enforcement community is a family,
united by the same hopes and fears, and the same steadfast
commitment to duty. When a young man or woman becomes a peace
officer, they are making more than a career choice they are
making a commitment.
Keeping a tight grip
on purse strings
(By Texas Senator Kim Brimer) - One of my missions as a member of
the legislature has been to keep a close watch on our spending. I
have been fortunate to be a part of the state budget-writing team in
the Senate, which has given me a hands-on opportunity to keep a
tight grip on the purse strings.
Security on the
border
(By Sheriff Leo Samaniego, El Paso County) - As law enforcement
officers on the border, our primary concern is the safety of our
citizens. The members of the Texas Border Sheriffs Coalition have
done everything possible to bring awareness to the leaders of our
nation. The terrorism threat is very real.
The face of policing
in the 21st century
(By Houston Chief of Police Harold Hunt) - For the nations 4th
largest city, crime continues to remain relatively low, technology
continues to increase the efficacy of law enforcement and the
cooperative working relationship between police and the people we
serve is the strongest it has ever been.
Contracts
(By Kent Hanszen) - As with many businesses, many of you likely rely
on on-the-ground employees and managers to assist you in day-to-day
operations. While such reliance may be necessary for a business
operation, the actions of those trusted employees or managers,
surprisingly, may give rise to liability for the company.
PSI violations
(By Buck Shodrock) - Over the past years, the types of reported
violations involving the Private Security Industry have changed for
various reasons.
Convention 2007 El
Paso Texas
(By Dave Scepanski) - As the private security industry constantly
changes, it is critical that ASSIST and its members and non-members
work collectively to meet those changes now and into the future.
This years annual conference entitled Security on the
Borders is a unique opportunity that brings together professional
experts and private security companies to discuss issues facing the
security officers, and security profession.
Employee handbooks -
The first step in protecting your business
(By J.E. Barry Greve, Jr.) - As 2007 begins, many security companies
are gearing up for the new year with new strategies, new goals, new
plans and better organization. If you are not sure where to start
the new year, start with your companys employee handbook.
LEAPS - El Paso
The El Paso Police Department is proud to be a founding member of
our citys LEAPS program. With immense pressure being placed on
our limited police resources to keep crime rates down, the only hope
to accomplish this seemingly impossible mandate is to form
supportive partnerships with our private security providers.
LEAPS - Dallas
By utilizing the additional eyes and ears of the private security
industry, the citizens of Dallas are afforded the opportunity to
benefit from an additional 10-15,000 trained security personnel who
are working to reduce criminal activity and misconduct.
LEAPS - Houston
We must all find a way to work together. It does not matter if you
are a police officer or a security officer; we are all on the same
team. We must find that common ground we can all stand on to achieve
our goals which is to make our city a safer place to live.
Making it happen
ASSIST and its members owe a great deal of appreciation to Michelle
Ellis and Worth Casualty Insurance. She and her company stepped up
and paid for the printing of 42,000 information pocket cards for
police officers in the state.
Dallas shooting by
security guard brings up important questions
(By Walt Roberts) - The shooting of a suspected burglar by an
untrained, unlicensed employee acting as a security guard recently
in a Dallas area business, points out a major flaw in the laws
governing security officers in the State of Texas.
Family questions
police account of shooting
(Dallas Morning News) - Family members of a 19-year-old man who was
shot to death at a Lewisville car dealership are questioning a
police account that suggests he was trying to burglarize his place
of employment.
As we look back
(By Walt Roberts) - The accomplishments of ASSIST over the past few
years we have came a long way! However, the time has come for the
security profession to work hard together. This next legislative
session is proving to be one of our hardest in regard to protecting
the citizens of Texas, doing whats right, protecting ourselves
and our companies.
All about
'connecting' - ASSIST Membership
Membership in ones professional association has always been one
important sign of a dedicated professional, and this is certainly
true for security service companies, their employees, and our
vendors. But, for our unique types of businesses and our partners,
it is much, much more.
