Convention 2004 - a huge success!
(By Dave Scepanski) - The 2004 Annual ASSIST Convention was Terrific! Our thanks and congratulations go out to the Rio Grande Valley Region for delivering such a well-organized
program.
My first ASSIST state convention with security
professionals
(By Lt. Barry Bogle) - When Dave Scepanski asked me to attend the 2004 ASSIST Conference, I really wasnt sure what to expect. As a lieutenant with the El Paso Police Department and involved with local security companies, I knew of some of the issues that ASSIST was bringing to the forefront of law enforcement professionals and law makers in Texas.
The nation has become safer, but our job is far from over
(By U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison) - Nearly three years later, the images, sounds and emotions are still as clear as the cloudless sky that September morning. It was the wake-up call that came too late. Sept. 11 opened the worlds eyes, and the 9-11 Commission has opened our minds.
Collaborative legislative actions for law enforcement and security professionals
(By Senator John Whitmire) - Life aint what it used to be. During this day and age, the American public is well aware of the unthinkable. Whereas homeland security was once a phrase only a few knew, now its something we hear and worry about every day.
Incident Management Plan update
(By Rep. Joe Pickett) - When one thinks of history and the order of time reference that makes up our past, we refer to AD or BC. In modern times we have modified that to be post 9-11 or pre 9-11. I was working on a transportation project pre 9-11 that went into the post 9-11 era so like many things; it took on a different meaning.
ASSIST anticipates a busy legislative session
(By Bob Burt) - The security profession, again, can expect a lot of security-related legislative proposals during this current legislative session. Many of the issues are minor, but necessary, clarifications or additions to current law.
The new reality of multi-family security
(By Walter D. Roberts) - In a post 9/11 world, mounting insurance premiums, municipalities scrutinizing apartment management more than ever and huge liability settlements, protecting the assets of multi-family properties has become increasingly difficult. The days of, any warm body in a uniform, acting as security for apartment communities are over.
What is a Personal Protection Specialist
(By Don Ellis) - The first and most important directive to the professional bodyguard is to insure the safety and welfare of the principal. Controlling disturbances, apprehending criminals, or any other similar activity is not the task of the professional bodyguard.
Proactive Legislation for Security
(By Steve Tuttle) - TASER technology has rapidly become one of the fastest growing non-lethal devices used by law enforcement and the military in North America to safely incapacitate dangerous, combative or high-risk subjects who pose a risk to law enforcement officers, innocent citizens or themselves.
History and Origins of ASSIST: 1980s
(By Dale Watson) - In the eighties, the security industry was hit with an insurance crisis. Many companies had insurance with a surplus line carrier. The board adopted a position that if the insurance company was not licensed in Texas the proof of insurance certificate was void. Many companies found their licenses were being revoked.
U.S. Coast Guard Sea Marshals
(By Lt. Joseph J. Leonard, Jr.) - The United States Coast Guard is internationally recognized as the premier life-saving service in the world. Protecting life and property at sea is the major mission of the Coast Guard. Even in the post 9-11 world, this mission will remain paramount.
Security officers in Post 9/11 America
(By Marian Hoy) - The events of 9/11 changed all of our lives. That single event demonstrated how vulnerable the U.S. is to those who hates us, and want to do us harm. Even though its been more than three years since 9/11 this country is still not prepared for a dirty bomb attack, or even another attack using aircraft as missiles.
Managing Security Today
(By Dave Scepanski) - Welcome security professionals in Texas and throughout the United States. First of all, I would like to dedicate the first issue of Managing Security Today to my board of directors and committee chairpersons and members of the committees.
Fighting
for Homeland Security
(By Rep. Pat Haggerty) - Representing the people of House District 78, El Paso, Texas is both an honor and a privilege for me. It also allows me to have a unique perspective on homeland security that I am able to share with my fellow
lawmakers.
Homeland Security in Texas: Ongoing
(By Sen. Florence Shapiro) - Like other notable dates in our nations history such as December 7, 1941 or November 22, 1963 although you may not remember your day prior to the disaster, you certainly remember that day and how you spent it following the
tragedy.
Taking the Necessary
Steps to Protect Our Ports of Entry
(By Sen. Mike Jackson) - My legislative district, Senate District 11, includes Galveston, Harris and Brazoria counties. Representing a large maritime port of entry creates many new security
challenges.
Homeland Security
Our Number One Priority
(By Rep. Joe Driver) - Changes in homeland security procedures have become a major priority for the Texas Legislature and in particular, the House Law Enforcement Committee. We spend countless hours studying and debating proposals to change the way we provide protection to our citizens in order to better deal with the new threats of terrorism.
Port Security and the Maritime Transportations Security Act
(By Lieutenant Joseph J. Leonard, Jr.) - September 11, 2001 demonstrated to all Americans, and security professionals in particular, that there were significant gaps in the procedures we use everyday to safeguard our way of life. Many of these changes became evident to all of us as we traveled via commercial carrier.
Business Smarts: With Mark Smith
As president of Smith Protective Services Inc., Mark Smith is in charge of one of the largest security companies in the nation. Read on as Smith explains the keys to his companys
success...
Education Ensures a Safe America
(By Hector Pea) - Texas leads the way when it comes to providing private security professional education in the State.
Law Enforcement: Getting More Bang for the Buck
(By Richard D. Wiles) - Budget constraints are nothing new to law enforcement management. But, in todays economic environment, many departments are facing severe budget cuts not only from their local governing body, but also from reduced grants from the federal and state level.
A Heros Story (Dallas
Security Officers Quick Response Saves Lives)
The day could have been like any other day except it wasnt. Not for Cpl. Brian Price,
anyway. Thats because on May 27, 2004 Cpl. Price risked his life, saving unsuspecting victims from an intense fire that was ripping through their apartment building.
Lets Get Personal (History and Origins of ASSIST 1970 - 1980)
(By Dale Watson) - The thriving organization known today as ASSIST began to evolve in the 1960s. The security industry in the state at the time was in trouble unethical operators were rampant and the ethical companies wanted to do something about the problem.
Working Together: ASSIST and ASIS International
(By Neal P. Mulchrone, CPP) - Many ASSIST members are also ASIS International members. Conversely, many ASIS International members also belong to ASSIST. This is a strong statement of the true partnership these entities must continue to forge.
Fallen Officers Fund
(By James McClure) - The State Executive Board of ASSIST created the Security Officers Memorial Fund so that in the future, monies will be more readily available for the families of security officers who have fallen in the line-of-duty.
In Memory of Ed Clendenin, CPP
(By Dave Parker) - ASSIST and the security profession have suffered a great loss with the passing of Ed Clendenin in June 2004. Ed was a member of the Houston region and a great contributor to our efforts, particularly in the area of consulting. We will always remember Ed for his original thoughts.
Associate and Employee Memberships
(By Dave Parker) - How many associate members does your company have? Well, if youve beaten Mark Smith of Smith Protective Services, youre in pretty good shape.
