Message
from ASSIST President Dan Flores
I have wonderful news to pass on since our last board meeting. It is
going to be my intent to keep you informed of what is happening at
our board meetings.
Assault against a
security officer
(By Jeff Moore) If you are a company owner, manager or
supervisor please make sure that if one of your security officers is
assaulted, you do everything you can to make sure that your
officers rights are protected and that the criminal gets the
maximum the law will allow.
Legislative report
(By Walt Roberts) As we are preparing to begin our Legislative
agenda for the next session we know there are a few things that need
to be addressed.
Better know a
legislator Representative Rafael Ancha
During his service in the Legislature, Rep. Ancha has worked on
legislation to fight crime, improve public safety, protect our
environment and improve health coverage for women and children.
Better know a
legislator Senator Kel Seliger
Senator Seliger currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Senate
Criminal Justice Committee and is a member of the Natural Resources,
International Relations and Trade, and Administration Committees.
Good record keeping
practices essential when security contractors go to court
(By Carlos Peniche) Most of my readers think about being sued,
but remember, if you need to file suit to collect on a debt for
services rendered, it helps to have good records to prove those
services were rendered.
A solution to
employee turnover
(By Josh Ring) Premiums for employer sponsored health insurance
in the United States have been rising 4 times faster on average than
workers earnings since 2000, according to one 2006 study. And
its not a new problem.
Private Security
Bureau
(By Capt. RenEarl Bowie) I would like to formally welcome the
new members of the Private Security Board who participated in their
first board meeting in March. I look forward to working closely with
the board to continue the progress that has been made with members
of ASSIST and the bureau.
Introducing myself
to ASSIST
(By Frank E. Perez) I hope my years of experience in various
organizations, as well as my professional history, allow me to
contribute something special to the ASSIST organization. I look
forward to meeting as many of you as possible.
A response to
students carrying concealed handguns on campus
(By William Adcox & Thomas Engells) We believe that a
movement to authorize concealed handguns to be carried on a college
campus may be an over-reaction to the current situation and argue
against it.
Introduction of
firearms on university campuses
(By Cliff Walsh) Carrying firearms onto a university campus and
into the halls of learning, teaching and research is contrary to the
fundamental philosophical cornerstone of higher education
institutions and would increase the number and nature of hazards
which law enforcement must address.
The history of
ASSIST
(By Susan Griswold) Over the course of my career, I have seen a
drastic improvement in the level of professionalism in our field.
Gone are the days of rogue security companies that can operate
under the radar with no fear of being held accountable for
their actions.
Building a better
security officer Part Two
(By Mark Smith) Maybe there should be just one question on the
Security Officer Employment Application - Do you care about other
people?
In The News
Alarm company donates to Fallen Officer Fund; Working with LEAPS
helps reduce auto theft in El Paso; Gulf Coast Region BBQ for Fallen
Officer Fund; GPS tracking devices used for security at Super Bowl.
The Oakley Report
(By Keith Oakley) During one of the Special Sessions of the
Texas Legislature in 2006, called to deal with high property taxes,
the Legislature passed a sweeping change in the state business tax.
LEAPS Dallas
On March 26 we had a great round table discussion and formed new
committees to attack membership, training and Health and Welfare
issues.
LEAPS Houston
Our LEAPS meetings every other month give security and law
enforcement professionals a chance to interact with each other off
the street. It is a very successful way to allow all of us to
communicate off the street and learn what each of us do
professionally.
The Last Word
(By Dan Flores) DPS has been gracious to attend all of our
functions that we have set up. They continue to provide professional
leadership and are simply asking for compliance when it comes to
state statutes.
