& Press Releases (continued)
A
Note from Pat Haggerty
In the past five years, Ive been fortunate to witness the growth
of a few far flung companies into a profession. A profession with
standards, ideals and a moral compass that should make everyone of
its members so very proud.
Message from ASSIST
President Dan Flores
I want to start my column by first thanking each one of you for
selecting me as your president. It is such a huge honor for me and I
feel so privileged to be the leader of such a fine and well
established association.
Assault against a
security officer
(By Jeff Moore) - I would like to discuss some training issues which
could greatly reduce the risk of your security officers being
assaulted. Better trained security officers are more confident in
how to handle themselves in the field when put into potentially
dangerous situations.
Pre-employment drug
testing
(By Walt Roberts) - At the last Private Security Bureau Commission
meeting Dec. 6, 2007, the subject of pre-employment drug screening
of all employees regulated under the agency was discussed. Obviously
it was met with opposition from the ASSIST board.
The growing role of
Texas security professionals
(By Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr.) - Representing the border region, I am
keenly aware that the work security companies perform will play a
critical role in the success of law enforcement curbing local and
international crime.
The making of
sausages and laws
(By Rep. Joe Driver) - The next time you wonder why your ASSIST
representatives are spending so much time in Austin and asking you
to support their legislative efforts, if you wonder how hard it can
be to convince the Texas Legislature to adopt good public policy
related to your industry, just remember, theres a good reason you
dont want to see the making of either sausages or laws.
Employer-related
liabilities
(By Josh Ring) - An EPLI policy can protect a security company (and
its owners) from claims of discrimination, sexual harassment,
wrongful termination and breach of employment contracts.
Read contracts
BEFORE you sign
(By Kent Hanszen) - Contracts not only govern day-to-day operations
with clients, but contracts often provide the road map for resolving
disputes.
Being sloppy with
PSB paperwork can get you indicted
(By Carlos Peniche) - Make sure what you are signing for submission
to the PSB is correct whether the form has a warning on it or not.
The face of policing
in the 21st century
(By Harold Hurtt) - The partnership between the public and special
interest groups such as religious organizations, business leaders,
and civic groups are already widely used by police agencies to solve
problems, engage the community and prevent crime. The one resource
that many police agencies have failed to cultivate is private
security.
Private Security
Bureau
(By Capt. Leonard Hinojosa) - As we enter a year, I would like to
reflect on the great working relationship that continues to grow
between law enforcement and the private security professions.
How to build a
better security company (Part One: Building a better security
officer)
(By Mark Smith) - Loyalty, commitment, and competence in our
officers is the best way really the only way to retain
customers and build a long term reputation as a top notch security
provider. So how does one build loyalty, commitment, and competence?
Things Change
(By Ann Ball) - Change happens, it happens now, and if we dont
get on at the cooperation station today, tomorrow we may be left
standing alone on the street corner with empty pockets.
LEAPS Houston
(By Jeff Moore, Chairman) - Let me again give a very big thank you
to my good friend and brother in blue, HPD Officer Joe Sanchez, for
his assistance in coordinating the speakers and setting up the
meetings. We have had some great speakers the last several months
that I would like to tell you about.
LEAPS El Paso
The past year witnessed several major advances within the El Paso
LEAPS Association. Our membership has grown and the association now
has more than 70 active members representing each of the major
local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies in our region
plus an equal number of private security professionals from the
guard, private investigations, alarm, and security consulting
industry.
LEAPS Dallas
LEAPS North Texas held a reception for its newly elected officers:
Walt Roberts was elected chairman, vice chairman was Larry Regan,
secretary is David Clines and treasurer is Kevin Thomas. Regan and
Thomas are two returning board members. We all owe a great deal of
thanks to Marieta MO Oglesby who was willing to serve as
chairman for many years.
In The News
A special thanks to our legislative heroes (by Dan Flores); Sun City
Security appoints new partner; Mark L. Smith appointed to Texas PSB.
2007 ASSIST
Convention recap
(By Dave Parker) - As president I had the honor of attending one of
the best conventions in the history of ASSIST, in October 2007. I
know most members attended, but I thought a review might be in
order.
The Last Word
(By Dan Flores) - I hope that when security officers read this
column that they see the importance of following all state mandated
guidelines, because in the end it could be you, that suffers a loss.
