A uniformed security guard turned the tables on a group of would-be robbers this afternoon when he opened fire on them, wounding two, officials said.
Detectives said the guard was driving money from a nightclub to the bank about 1:30 p.m., when he was blocked in by three cars and forced to stop at the intersection of Ella and Kuykendahl.
Harris County Sheriff's Sgt. Bruce Williams said the men then jumped from their cars and demanded money from the guard, identified by co-workers as Eduardo Gutierrez, 28.
Gutierrez opened fire, hitting one man in the abdomen and another in the leg, Williams said. The third robber fled. Gutierrez was unhurt.
The wounded men's medical conditions were not immediately available. The man shot in the abdomen was flown by Life Flight helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital and rushed into surgery.
The man shot in the leg ran to a nearby apartment complex, but was found and taken by ambulance to Ben Taub Hospital.
Gutierrez was working for Spartan South Houston Patrol. The shooting will be referred to a grand jury for review.
