UNLICENSED OPERATOR COMMITTEE REPORT:

At the writing of this article I am happy to report there is progress on the unlicensed operator program. It may not seem as fast as many of you would like (I get frustrated sometimes myself), however I can report progress. The agencies main focus is report of unlicensed persons or operators caring weapons. As we all know, thats what makes headlines should something occur and getting them off the street is a priority item. It is my understanding that in the Dallas/Fort Worth there has been arrests, weapons seized and there are approximately 125 cases currently working with one investigator. Our committee has not turned in one bad complaint that I know of. The beauty of our system is that each report to ASSIST is investigated prior to a report to the agency, therefore we verify the information and the investigator is not chasing leads that do not turn out.

On Wednesday the 24th of April the new DPS representative overseeing our agency attended part of the ASSIST executive board meeting. Dave insisted that I give her the run down on what we are doing on reporting unlicensed operators. After meeting with Ms. Valerie Fulmer, many of us (myself included) were encouraged at her interest and feel DPS may be helping with enforcement soon. We are getting help from other agencies, example: If a company or officer is unlicensed and working on a licensed premise (any place that sells or serves alcohol) the agency is reporting it to TABC who is investigating and in many cases making arrests.

Much of what I am reporting has moved to the forefront since February 1, when DPS basically took charge. The agency and DPS is getting familiar with one another and are still in the honeymoon stage. I am optimistic and look forward to a great working relationship.

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT
WALT ROBERTS, CHAIRMAN
