Firm Probed After Guard Arrested

A Houston security firm is being investigated by the federal government after it allegedly hired an illegal immigrant. A March 3rd arrest led to the investigation. The investigation also includes the role of the Federal Protective Services, the federal agency that contracts companies for numerous federal offices. The agency is also responsible for background checks of security employees hired by their contractors.

The officer, a Peruvian immigrant who has lived in the United States since 1992, remains in federal custody after his arrest. He has been officially charged with possession of a firearm as an illegal immigrant.

At the time of his arrest, the officer was working as an armed officer at the Immigration and Naturalization office.

Thats what you call irony, a federal public defender representing the officer was quoted as saying.

The owner of the security company said that the officer had been employed by his company for about two years. The owner also said that he was not aware of the officers illegal immigrant status.

Carl Rusnok, spokesman for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which includes the Federal Protection Service, said he could not comment about the ongoing investigation.
