Fellow ASSIST Members:
In the past few months I have been quite busy helping Dave and the other members of the Executive Board on a few items. The first thing on our agenda has been the reporting of unlicensed operators. At the past convention, if you were in attendance you heard me on my soapbox addressing the changes in the law and how WE the licensees need to help the agency and report suspected violators. No, you do not do it directly. Fax, mail or e-mail information to me and I will send it in on ASSIST letterhead and track the progress. Who gets reported; any company or business that provides or employs security personnel that fall in the new guidelines of 1702.108, 1702.222, 1702 323 and commits an offense of impersonating a security officer if they persist. The agency has been responsive to the reports we have made and have a letter of notification for these unlicensed operators prepared and awaiting approval by the Attorney Generals Office.
Next; the Qualifications for taking the License Managers Examination. For a while ASSIST has been concerned about the quality of managers as licensees. As you know, if someone works for you as an office person or field supervisor and meets the other requirements he or she can apply, take the test and meeting all the requirements become the license manager. As an ASSIST Board member who has sat through years of commission meeting and listened to officers and supervisors testify regarding paperwork and their applications this could be one of the most important issues facing our industry in the future. After 9/11, I feel that security was given a black eye regarding our personnel and qualifications. If we, as a professional education based organization are going to improve our image its got to happen from the TOP DOWN. I have been appointed as the chair of the committee to address these Qualifications and I can assure you by the board meeting in December, my committee will have suggestions prepared so I may present them to the ASSIST Executive Board and if approved, on to the State Board.
In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dave and the Executive Board for their support and efforts on behalf of our membership. It is a pleasure to serve with these professionals
Walt Roberts
Past President
