82nd Legislative Session & Other Points of
Interest
By Walt Roberts
ASSIST Executive Vice President
As we look toward the future, we have to be mindful and determined to keep our laws, rules and directives helping us run our business and not to harm them. We have seen some pre-filing of bills that could be an issue. Your team of Bob Burt, Alan Trevino, George Craig, Keith Oakley and I stand ready to address any and all issues that may affect our profession. Fortunately, this isnt our first rodeo. However, each legislative session is different from the rest.
The state is going to be looking for revenue-generating programs and to cut or combine agencies duties to get more bang for the taxpayers buck. That could cost us in enforcement, registration time and the way the DPS/PSB operates. We will be watching.
We have 37 new state representatives many of who have made promises to their constituents to make changes. I urge you to make contact with both your state representatives and senators to enlist their support for our causes. Our main goal with ASSIST is to watchdog both the legislature and the Private Security Bureau, keeping the governmental intrusion in our businesses at a minimum. In doing so, we hope this will allow you to pay more attention to your business and less time worrying about inspections, new laws and constant changing rules.
In a final note, I hope you all had a merry Christmas and a happy new year.
