Internet Privacy Takes Shape in Senate

A bill (S. 2201) designed to protect personal information of internet users has been approved by the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee. The bill would prohibit internet service providers and commercial web site owners from collecting such information as names, addresses, or phone numbers from users without written permission from the user. Other information such as health, race, political party, religious beliefs, or sexual orientation would also be protected from collection and disclosure unless permission was obtained from the user.

The bill would further require that operators establish and maintain the security, confidentiality, and integrity of such information. Violations of the act would be considered unfair or deceptive trade practices and would be enforced through the Federal Trade Commission.

To proceed, the bill will now have to be approved by the full Senate.
