Alarm company donates to Fallen Officer Fund

A special thanks to Otto Maser of Maser Alarms Company El Paso, representing West Texas Alarm Association, which is no longer in existence, for donating to the Fallen Officer Fund a check for $1,119 to the Jessie Ruelas, ASSIST president of the El Paso Region, in our April Meeting.

Working with LEAPS helps reduce auto theft in El Paso

El Paso had been plagued with a rash of auto burglaries that distracted the police department and threatened the city. There had been 15 vehicles burglarized within one week, sometimes 3-4 vehicles burglarized within the same parking lot. Several Hospitals to include the Childrens Hospital at Providence Memorial Hospital had been hit several times during that week.

The night Supervisor, Capt. Jeanette Maes at Providence Hospital decided that she had had enough she took it personal and was not going to allow these thieves continue to disadvantage our customers. She was determined to stop these thieves. On Sunday morning, May 3 at 2:34 a.m., Maes observed on camera a suspicious vehicle circling the parking lot checking vehicles. The vehicle had two people inside, a man and a woman. They stopped in front of a parked pick-up truck. The man proceeded to break into the passenger door while the woman stood watch. They were unaware that Maes was recording their actions and had called the El Paso Police Department. The suspects removed items from the vehicle and went for a second one. Maes dispatched Lt. David Menchaca to direct the police to the suspects.

A few minutes later the police arrived as the suspects were trying to leave the parking lot. Menchaca shined his flashlight on the suspects vehicle as they tried to leave and the police blocked their escape. The suspects turned around, trying to leave through the rear of the parking lot and fell into the police officers trap. The plan worked perfectly, as the officers stood their ground directly in front of the vehicle with weapons drawn the vehicle stopped. The suspects were removed and arrested.

This is an example of the team work between security and law enforcement created here in El Paso through the LEAPS program. Our hospital security and the El Paso Police Departments Westside Regional Command work together daily. Its a great relationship and weve come to rely on each other for support and assistance. We are proud of our relationship and truly enjoy work together to help keep El Paso one of the safest large cities in Texas.

Gulf Coast Region BBQ for Fallen Officer Fund

This years Fallen Officer BBQ 2008 went off with a bang! This event would not be possible without the persistence and determination of our Event Chairman Ruben Amaya. This gentleman has gone above and beyond the call of duty for the past four years with this event. We would like to recognize Virgie (Mom) and Raul from Charlies House for providing the location and J.D. Camarillo for providing the tables, chairs, moon walk, snow cone machine and popcorn machine. All the sales from these items are donated to the Fallen Officer Fund. Last but not least D.J. Alien that has donated his time and equipment for the past two years for this great cause.

We would like to give a special thank you to those of you that have been there for the last four years from start to finish: Ann Ball, Kim Villarreal, the Certified Security Plus staff, our sponsors and last but definitely not least our security officers. Without you, none of this would be possible.

GPS tracking devices used for security at Super Bowl

CRANFORD, NJ, For the first time in Super Bowl history, GPS/wireless tracking devices were used to monitor, track, and manage security personnel in real-time via the Internet, which could speed up security incidence response times.

The NovaTracker GuardTrax SFL (Security Force Locator) is the security industrys first real-time personal GPS tracking solution for field personnel. GuardTrax enables security supervisors and managers to track, monitor and manage their field security forces in real-time at all times. The GuardTrax SFL utilizes GPS antenna GSM wireless communication which pinpoints location and activity data and combines it with mapping and satellite imagery software that is accurate to within several feet.

This gives security supervisors and managers a virtual window from which they can monitor the activities of their roaming supervisors in the stands in real-time from the Super Bowl security office or anywhere in the world, explains Mike Petty, VP at NovaTracker. Rather than try to talk over thousands of screaming fans, a field supervisor will punch in a simple response code in seconds to indicate an EMS emergency, altercation, or up to 23 different incident codes relating to security performance. In the case of a fan having a heart attack for example, saving minutes could save a life.

The GuardTrax SFL has an innovative incident reporting system that utilizes a straightforward multi-function button coding system. These coded incident reports, together with the location, time, date, and other critical incident location data are received by the GuardTrax server where they are immediately relayed to supervisors and mangers via email or SMS.

In addition to the officer-initiated or keyed incident reporting, the GuardTrax SFL is equipped with a motion sensor that will report if the device has had no motion for a predetermined amount of time. If something happens to security personnel holding a device, the security office will be alerted.

There certainly wont be any guards sleeping at this game, thats for sure, but not all assignments are as exciting as this one, Petty adds.

The security industry has been waiting for years for a system like GuardTrax that enables management to monitor each guards exact location and movement in real-time from any Internet-enabled location to respond quickly and appropriately, explains David Leis, Chief Marketing Officer at NovaTracker. Ensuring each guards personal safety and security, while monitoring performance, is now as simple as using a web browser, and clicking on a location to watch the movement of each guards avatar. We believe it will help firms scale back management expenses, mitigate theft liability, and lower insurance costs.

Weighing only six ounces and measuring approximately 2x6, the GuardTrax unit is barely larger than the average cell phone and can easily fit into a shirt or pant pocket. Rugged design and a weather-resistant case make for a highly-functional and durable device.

GuardTrax units are now being leased by several top security companies. For an online demo, visit www.guardtrax.com.
