LEAPS
Dallas
Walt Roberts, Chairman
LEAPS North Texas held a reception for its newly elected officers: Walt Roberts was elected chairman, vice chairman was Larry Regan, secretary is David Clines and treasurer is Kevin Thomas. Regan and Thomas are two returning board members. We all owe a great deal of thanks to Marieta MO Oglesby who was willing to serve as chairman for many years. I visited with Mo recently and she wanted everyone to know how thankful she was for the opportunity of serving as the LEAPS chair. Mo will remain involved with LEAPS and we are lucky to have her.
One of the highlights of the event was the award from LEAPS recognizing Security Officer Brandon Pennington and his work with Smith Protective Services. During his routine duties Officer Pennington was given the description of a vehicle used in multiple home invasion robberies in the North Dallas area. While patrolling Pennington observed a vehicle matching the description. At this point, he notified the Dallas Police Department who responded and arrested the subject. This is the reason LEAPS was started! This type of information sharing and cooperation helps the police, who in many cases are overextended and shorthanded. It reduces crime and is a help to the community and the citizens.
In addition to the majority of the newly elected officers attending the reception, we had Dr. Elba Garcia, mayor pro tem, from the Dallas City Council, and the Dallas Police was represented by Deputy Chief Brian Harvey, Deputy Chief Vince Goldbeck, Deputy Chief Shelia Scott and Deputy Chief Rick Watson and all of the new security liaisons at the seven divisions.
Many of our members were in attendance: Tim Dyson, Bob Marquis, Mark Smith, Jeff Gray, Henry Clemons, John Roberts, North Texas President Kathy McKeynolds, Bob Kenney and Mike McGregor.
We held an executive board meeting prior to the reception and many new and inovatative ideas were discussed. So many, we are planning another meeting shortly just to finish the first meeting.
Dallas Police Officer Keith Allen who stays in the background as much as possible needs to be recognized. He works hard to keep LEAPS and the security profession in Dallas at the forefront. Keith, we appreciate you, thanks.
I am sure in 2008 there will be some new classes, additional meetings and a big push to get everyone in the Dallas area involved.
