Message from ASSIST President
Dan Flores
Greetings to all ASSIST members, security officers and investigators of the state of Texas.
I would like to dedicate this issue of Managing Security Today to fallen officers in the state of Texas.
I want to start my column by first thanking each one of you for selecting me as your president. It is such a huge honor for me and I feel so privileged to be the leader of such a fine and well established association.
My sincere commitment will be to take this associations issues that are forthcoming to ensure that we provide the best tools for all security officers in Texas.
Currently, we have our proposed training guidelines posted on the web. It is important that you take the time to review and let me know if we are missing anything. We are going to bring said rules to the DPS Commission in March for final approval. Again, ASSIST will be there to make sure that security officers in Texas are treated fairly and equally.
At this point, I want to address the convention. Again, Dave Scepanski and the El Paso region put on a show that is unforgettable. We have never had, in my history with ASSIST, a convention that gave so much to each one of us.
Dave S. and the El Paso region were able to raise more than $40,000. This is unbelievable, coming from a small group. I know that Houston is going to try to beat the money figure but they have their hands full. I want to personally thank the new El Paso Regional President, Jessie Ruelas, for his fine assistance. Ruelas was well prepared for any issue that came up.
Next, I want to thank all of the federal, state and local officials that attended our convention.
Never in the history of ASSIST had we had so many fine legislators come to our convention and participate in our endeavors.
I am so grateful to my Senator Eddie Lucio for attending. The fact that he made time to present us all with state gavels was so rewarding. I know Senator Lucio will be there for us in the future.
2008 is the year for us to get prepared for 2009 legislation. I will be asking each regional president for input but I will also attempt to ask the membership to submit input on new laws or issues that need to be addressed.
We have a fine lobbyist, Keith Oakley, who will be there to get a head start on our new and proposed laws.
On a final note, I want to say that you can reach me through my e-mail address or at (832) 274-1079. I will return your call if I miss it.
Again, best wishes to everyone in 2008. God bless you and take care.
Please keep in mind that renewals for membership have been sent out. If we missed you, let us know. We need you as members. We will meet in March in Austin, and I will know by then how our membership renewal is doing.
