Reserve Officers Accused of Illegal Security Work
Two Dallas County reserve deputy constables were accused of working as nightclub security guards without a proper license. Christopher Green and Aaron Perkins were charged with operating a guard company without a license, according to Ryan Finch, an investigator with the Texas Commission on Private Security.
The charges are Class A misdemeanors punishable by up to a year in jail and a $4,000 fine. Both deputies were suspended in their precincts pending their trials.
Finch said Green and Perkins are certified peace officers, but not licensed to work as paid security officers. According to the Private Security Act, paid security guards must be licensed by the Commission unless they are full time peace officers who draw benefits. The two unpaid, volunteer deputy constables did not qualify under that exception and were barred from taking paid security jobs and from using their constable uniforms while doing such.
In related news from Austin, two police officers are under investigation for working as part-time security officers while on duty as patrol officers. George Haywood and Cedric McKelvey were working as security guards for Capital Metro while on the clock as patrol officers for the police department. A supervisor happened to notice that the officers were not at a location they were supposed to be at a given time, but were someplace else. One officer resigned, and the second was suspended without pay for 90
days.
