As we look back

The accomplishments of ASSIST over the past few years we have came a long way! However, the time has come for the security profession to work hard together. This next legislative session is proving to be one of our hardest in regard to protecting the citizens of Texas, doing what�s right, protecting ourselves and our companies.

Issues at hand:

1. Make requirements for becoming a license manager more stringent (Management Experience).

2. Allowing our commissioned security officers to carry their weapons (when on duty and in full uniform) anywhere a concealed carry permit holder can.

3. Changing the classification of our insurance category P.I.O. away from the Police and Fire classification.

4. Allowing us to file some sort of lien for non-payment of services.

5. Raising the allowable insurance requirements for company licensing.

6. Requiring all security officers in Texas to have criminal background checks, registering with Texas Department of Public Safety, Private Security Bureau and carry General Liability insurance.

7. Making it a criminal fineable offense to hire an unlicensed company or security officer.

8. Criminal Trespass as a citizen arrest offense or a breach of the peace.

Our objective is to try to get the importance of these legislative sessions across to the membership and nonmembers in the security profession. If you do not think it impacts your business you are dead wrong! These sessions have caused us to pay sales tax, taken budgets away from enforcement so unlicensed operators can compete with us, constantly trying to allow the non-paid reserve deputies to compete with us, raises your fees without service and made allowances so some security officers are not required to register or receive a criminal background check.

The single most item you have facing your business today is the upcoming legislative session. We need your help, make sure you State Representative and Senator know who you are and they support our causes.
