LEAPS Houston
Jeff Moore - LEAPS Chairman
Executive V.P., ASSIST Gulf Coast Region
State Chairman Assault Against A Security Officer
Blue Moon Investigations Security & Protection

Hello again from the great city of Houston, Texas. We, at Law Enforcement and Private Security, would like to introduce ourselves to you again. My name is Jeff Moore and L.E.A.P.S. in Houston has been going wonderful and is just getting better with each meeting. In case you did not know, we meet every other month at the brand new South Central Houston Police Station located at 2202 St. Emanuel, Houston TX 77004. We have had some very interesting speakers the last several months and have learned a great deal more about our brothers in law enforcement and are learning ways that we can all work together to achieve the common goal; to fight crime in our great city of Houston.

We had a presentation of the Greater Houston Search Dogs in May of this year. Our guest speakers were Beth Foster and Lottie Greenwood. They are both certified handlers and have had extensive experience doing dog searches for lost children and missing persons. They also brought some of their rescue dogs for a very neat and informative demo on what their abilities are. We were all very impressed.

The following meeting we had Detective Rick Rodriguez with the Houston Police Departments Robbery Division. Rodriguez went over some of the hot spots in Houston, making us all more aware of what to be on the look out for. We were also given materials that we can use and distribute to our clients that would help them know what to do in case of a robbery. These are just the kind of things that our security officers out there need to know. This was free training for all the officers in attendance and they received new information on how to handle themselves, as well as keep the customers and employees calm during a robbery.

The speaker for our last meeting was Sgt. Williams and the SWAT Team from Metro Police Department. They brought out their mobile command station center. We got to go inside and take a look at what would be going on in a SWAT style situation. They also brought out the gear that they would use during a chemical hazard situation or a terrorist threat. We also had the special treat of the Metro K-9 division with their trusty companion by their side. This was a powerful meeting and we were able to discuss security issues with these officers who were unaware of what we, as security officers, could do and how they can utilize our service to the community. When the meeting was over, there was a new profound respect between all and we had learned a few things about each other and what our common goals are.

We must all find a way to work together. It does not matter if you are a police officer or a security officer; we are all on the same team. We must find that common ground we can all stand on to achieve our goals which is to make our city a safer place to live. It is these goals that we are hoping to accomplish at our bi-monthly meetings with HPD at the South Central station and our monthly meetings with ASSIST at Aramco building. We all need to show more support and respect for our profession and stop waiting for other people to do it for us. I would like to see our Houston LEAPS meetings include not only the Houston Police Department but different areas of Law Enforcement as well. We, the security professionals, must first support our own profession in order to attract other agencies interest in us.

I hope to see more security officers and company owners and mangers attending these meetings. If you cannot make it to a meeting, then please send a representative from your company. We can only achieve success by first supporting our own profession. If you would like to attend our next meeting, please send me an e-mail and I will put you on our e-mail list. My e-mail is [email protected] or you can call me at (281) 332-1622. Do not forget we meet every other month at the South Central Police Station for the Houston Police Department located at 2202 St. Emmanuel, Houston, TX 77004. Remember, it does not work unless we all take part and make it happen.
