State conventions are important!

by Dave Parker
ASSIST Vice President

The North Texas Region is busily preparing for another great convention for ASSIST members. Our firm has several voting members and we all attend the conventions each year. Its a great vacation for us and our spouses!!

We visit with our friends from other companies across the state and get reacquainted again, exchange the latest horror stories, and visit some of the great sites of the region.

Sure, we attend classes and get our Continuing Education Credits, and we participate in the General Meeting each year, but the memories are always of the fishing trip, the golf tournament, the dinners, and who consumed a few too many adult beverages at any of the ASSIST events. Keith Oakley did what!?!

We enjoy the networking. We often learn new methods of recruiting, marketing, and overcoming profession challenges. Its not that we attend the convention to get this information, but, when security managers get together what else would we talk about?

The last few years weve included some powerful speakers to the agenda. The Governors staff, the Texas Homeland Security Director, State Senators and Representatives, members of the Private Security Board and the Bureau speak to us on a variety of issues which are key to our profession. We learn the direction of legislation, the internal challenges of the Department of Public Safety in absorbing the security profession, and much, much more.

The convention is a great opportunity to sit down with a state legislator and discuss an issue youre concerned about. If you cant figure out why the Bureau rejects your paperwork, Cliff Grumbles and George Craig are always very generous with their time, and are more than willing to sit down with you and discuss issues.

Perhaps youre interested in the direction of ASSIST or the profession. Dave Scepanski will be pleased to visit with you and hear you out. Dave is always concerned with the thoughts of ASSIST membership.

You may be experiencing difficulty with a vendor. ASSIST has tripled the number of vendor members in the last couple of years. Many of our vendors have booths at the convention, and you have the opportunity to find a better vendor.

The possibilities are endless, and its hard for me to imagine anyone could run an efficient, growing company in our profession without attending the annual convention!

Theres much to do, much to learn, and have fun at the same time! Set aside three or four days for this event! See you in Farmers Branch!!
