CENTRAL TEXAS REGION
Alan Trevino - President
The Central Texas Region held our first meeting of the year Jan. 26. This was a combined meeting with the LEAPS – Central Texas chapter and once again, we had a great turnout.
Our Austin Police Department liaison, Officer Shelly Borton was present and gave updates on the first three classes available for LEAPS. A big thank you goes out to State President Bob Burt, Gulf Coast Region President Ruben Amaya and our Lobbyist Keith Oakley for taking the time out of their busy schedules to attend our meeting.
We collectively gave updates on the State Board meeting held just the day before and the PSB Commission meeting held hours before our meeting. Our meeting dates for 2010 have been set. I encourage you to go the ASSIST website and click on the calendars link to get the most updated information on our meetings.
We braved the temperature and snow for our next meeting held Feb. 23. DPS-PSB investigators Melinda Lowery and Cleo May gave an outstanding presentation on “How to Survive a Compliance Inspection.” We were given handouts and plenty of time for an informational Q & A session after the presentation. Thank you, we are fortunate to have such a good working relationship with our investigators in this region.
March 30 our chapter met again. Marie Nicholson with Texas Mutual was our guest speaker and presented information on Workers Compensation. She covered the many available free training opportunities for members on the Texas Mutual website and made recommendations on how to develop your very own company safety program. The bottom line is, by educating and training your employees and reducing or eliminating risk and injury, you can have a very positive effect on reducing your workers compensation premiums. There was enough interest to have a representative from Texas Mutual return later in the year to cover workers compensation fraud and how to identify it.
To catch-up on what your ASSIST State Board and the TPSB Commission have been up to, go to the ASSIST website and the Texas Department of Public Safety website. Past meeting agendas for both groups are posted. Our region is steadily growing and we see new faces at every meeting. If you are not a member, join, and if you are a member and not active, get involved. Take advantage of the great benefits and business relationships available to you just for being a member.
Until next time, I hope you all have a great summer. For more information, contact Alan Trevino at 512-206-0515 or email
