LEAPS El Paso
Aaron Fernandez
Chairman

Law Enforcement and Private Security (LEAPS) work as a team in addressing crime in El Paso and now the El Paso Police Explorer program, the future members of LEAPS, have taken an initiative in crime prevention in area shopping centers working with police and private security in keeping burglaries of vehicles down. Police Explorer Post 2002 has taken their training to the field in identifying several vehicles as being left by the owners unlocked or having items visible to would be thieves or burglars.

The owners of a few of those vehicles were given crime prevention tips to better secure their vehicles and items. The explorers also leave crime prevention flyers on the vehicles informing the owners of their potential victimization. We hope such crime prevention will blossom and reduce the burglary of vehicles in other areas of town.

It is also with great pride to announce that the El Paso Police Explorers recently dominated competition in the state of Texas. Twelve members of the El Paso Police Department’s Explorer program competed in a multi-state competition made up of 78 teams from three states.

The El Paso Explorers had three teams of four members each who competed in 12 scenarios. We are proud to announce our teams took first place in two scenarios: First Aid and Call For Police. We also placed second in Crime Prevention and Crisis Negotiation, along with one third place and two fourth place finishes. Our team consisted of members of the explorer posts from all five regional command centers. Anyone between the age of 14 and 20 years old interested in joining the Explorer Program should contact the nearest regional command center in the city of El Paso.

We are honored to have such a large group of law enforcement and private security personnel who are able to communicate with one another and not feel intimidated.

LEAPS will be holding their meetings the second Friday of every month at Providence Memorial hospital, with the exceptions of June and August. These date are still pending. A special thanks to Providence Memorial Hospital, which pays for all the luncheons.
