ASSIST is proud to name State Representative Joe Driver as the 2009 Legislator of the Year.
He has been a friend to the security profession in Texas and has fought tirelessly on our behalf.
State Representative Joe Driver is currently serving his ninth term in the Texas House of Representatives for District 113, which includes the cities of Garland, Rowlett and Sachse.
Speaker of the House Joe Straus, appointed Driver to serve as a member of the Public Safety committee, Appropriations committee and Appropriations subcommittee on criminal justice. He is also an active member of the Texas Conservative Coalition, Republican Caucus, Legislative Sportsmen’s, Manufacturing, and Arts and Tourism caucuses.
Driver came to the legislature as a long-time civic leader in his community. He has served as chairman of the Garland Chamber of Commerce; president of the Noon Exchange Club; vice president of the New Beginning Center, a family violence prevention center; and chairman of the Science, Industry, Technology and Education Foundation of Garland.
He has also served on numerous boards and committees, such as Crimestoppers, Garland Economic Development Authority, the administrative board of First United Methodist Church, YMCA, YWCA, Heart Association and Junior League of Garland Advisory Board.
He is a graduate of Leadership Garland, which he later served as class instructor, advisor and board member of the alumni association. He is also a graduate of the Garland Citizens Police Academy and member of the Academy’s Alumni Association.
Driver has been active in the republican party for many years, serving in campaign positions as well as a delegate to state and senatorial district conventions. He is a member of the Greater Garland Republican Club.
Driver has won numerous honors and awards, including Who’s Who in American Politics, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who among Emerging Leaders, the Texas Municipal Police Association’s “Legislative Excellence Award,” Texas Association of Businesses “Fighter For Free Enterprise Award” and the Texas Municipal Police Association’s “Badge of Honor.” He was honored by the Texas Fire Chiefs Association for his efforts to improve fire service and fire safety for Texas through his efforts in the Texas Legislature and also by the Texas Retired Teachers Association for his dedicated service to education and retired teachers in Texas.
He was named “Legislator of the Year” by AAA and by the Justice of the Peace and Constable Association, “Legislative Crime Fighter of the Year” by the North Texas Crime Commission, “Man of the Year” by the Associated Security Services &
Investigators, “Outstanding Contributor to Law Enforcement” by the Texas Police Chiefs Association and is the recipient of the Rowlett Chamber of Commerce’s “Big R Pacesetter Award.”
Driver earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of North Texas in 1971. He has been an agent for State Farm Insurance for 36 years. Joe is married to DeAnne, and they have two grown children. They are active members of First United Methodist Church in Garland.
