Assault against a security
officer
By Jeff Moore
ASSIST STATE BOARD VICE PRESIDENT
Hello to everyone again! I have been serving as chairman of the Assault Against A Security Officer Committee since 2003 and have really enjoyed keeping you informed of what is going on with our officers when they have been assaulted and how we were able to get the right charges filed. While I am writing this article, my heart is heavy due to a horrific assault that took place this past weekend on one of my very own security officers. In this article
I am sharing his story with you so you can see firsthand how dangerous a job our officers really
have.
Due to the respect of privacy I will not be using any real names to keep all those involved in confidence.
It was a Saturday night around midnight and my officer was on foot patrol in a medium-income apartment complex.
While making his rounds he came upon eight Hispanic males hanging around in the parking lot, drinking and partying. As my officer approached, one of the males gave chase. Not knowing why, my officer took off after the male, running to see where he was going. My officer lost sight of the suspect and headed back to his personal vehicle to record the event he had just witnessed. As he approached his vehicle he noticed another Hispanic male trying to break into his vehicle. When my officer approached, the male he also gave chase. This time my officer caught the male and was in the process of escorting him back to his vehicle to assess the damage.
As my officer got closer to his personal vehicle he began to inspect his vehicle, call for back up and have dispatch call the Houston Police Department to come out to the property. He was suddenly jumped by four Hispanic males who were hiding by his vehicle. The four males began to feverishly punch, head butt and kick my officer. While he tried to struggle against them, he felt that his life was in imminent danger.
He drew his weapon and aimed it at the man who was approaching him in the front to strike him again and fired one round, hitting the man in the stomach area in an attempt to stop the threat. The assailant immediately fell to the ground. The three other attackers were struggling for control of the officer’s gun. The officer managed to drop the clip from the weapon and fire the remaining round to make the weapon clear. It was just after this that my officer took a severe blow to the head that knocked him unconscious.
According to two eyewitnesses, while lying on the ground totally defenseless, one of the men took my officer’s weapon and pointed at his head pulling the trigger several times.
The gun never fired. But it gives me chills to think what would have happened if his weapon would have been
loaded. After regaining consciousness my officer was helped by two good samaritans.
The police and my other supervisors arrived to hear the horrifying story that fortunately, had a remarkable ending. The men were all caught by the police and the one who was shot was captured at the hospital while being treated for the gunshot wound.
I want to take the time to personally thank my officer for his bravery and quick
action. He has helped take four gang members off the streets of Houston.
So yes, security can and does make a difference every day.
It is up to every company owner, manager and supervisor to make sure that if your security officer is assaulted, you do everything in your power to make sure his rights are protected and the criminal goes to jail.
It has been my pleasure to serve on this committee and I look forward to continuing my service to all of our ASSIST members as well as our non-members.
